Putting on a Show, Part 2: Products

0

(This is the second in a two part series on Putting on a Show. You can find part 1 here.)

My offing for the first Merry Treasure’s show was eclectic, at best. I really had no idea of what to make or sell, how much to sell it for, or even if we would have anyone come to shop our wares. It was a bust for me. I think I made a total of $40 and spent about that much shopping at other booths. In the spring time, the IDEA Store had another show, Persephone’s Treasures. I’d started soldering a few months before it in anticipation of making things for the show. I worked my butt off to make things that I liked. I considered it practice so many items were sold at a lower price than they normally would. I killed. I came home with very few things. I evaluated my successes and shortcomings and put that in to play with the next show: Merry Treasures 2012.

I started with my product. I made what I like and just left it at that. The main issue with a show of this type is the price point, which was set at “stocking stuffer” prices. I took that to mean under $25. Because jewelry is labor intensive and also can cost a fair amount for supplies, I went with a you-pick necklace model. That is, many small items that could be hung on a chain to create a unique and personal necklace. I created soldered pendants in a variety of shapes and styles. I also create a few things to add like frozen Charlotte pendants and thimble charms. The variety was fun to make and allowed for a lot more options. I also included a small collection of one of a kind items made in to charms. I made a number of finished necklaces available ranging in price from $15 up to about $65. I knew I was pushing the limit of pricing, but also knew that finished product is something that people would be interested in. And I really enjoyed making them. I threw in some of the lace crowns, which were also fun to make, and some pretty bookmarks. These started at $2 and went up from there. Last year I noticed that having some really small items was great for the kid shoppers that wanted to buy things for mom and grandma. I admit that my selection was very feminine but also knew that the majority of shoppers would be female. Know your audience.

Most items fell between $5 and $15. I wanted to keep the prices low to encourage shopping, make items that would be great as gifts but also for people to buy for themselves. I decided on a build a necklace model where each piece could be worn alone or put together with other pieces to build something unique.

So that’s it in a nutshell. I promised I would post my extras here for sale. There’s enough time to order for Christmas presents, if you hurry.
